Students at Harper Adams are to be offered the chance to study in Australia in the New Year – with potential financial support of up to £2600 available.

The announcement comes after the University secured funding from the Turing Scheme – the Government’s flagship funding mechanism to help UK registered students study abroad.

There are three places available on the trip, in Spring 2026, which will see those chosen flying out to Charles Sturt University in Australia on the trip of a lifetime – studying for just under a month on a tailored trip, with accommodation provided.

Dr Mitch Crook, who will be administering the program, said: “The students will be located at the university’s Wagga Wagga Campus, which is around four hours inland from Sydney.

“Wagga Wagga is known for its thriving cultural scene, and just like Harper Adams, there is a farm and a vineyard on-site– as well as a huge range of technical and industry standard facilities.

“The visit is open to both second and final year students, and all participants will take part in lectures and field visits. We’re aiming to tailor the specific programmes of study to each student’s interests as much as possible – though an interest rural land use is essential.

“This could include livestock, equine, crop production, agriculture, food production and land use in general – we’ll be asking each student who makes the trip to write us a report based on their experiences, and we’re expecting these to be fascinating!”

The three students who take part are provisionally expected to travel out around March 28 and return on April 23.

Potential applicants will be judged on a range of suitability criteria, with up to £1981 rom the Turing Scheme and additional funding of £750 from the Harper Adams Development Trust.

Mitch added: “We planning to book flights and arrange travel from Sydney so students will be flying out as a group – we’ll have a buddy system in place before students fly.

“Self-catering accommodation is already booked and there may be the opportunity to hire one of Charles Sturt University’s fleet vehicles during your stay too.”

For now, all interested students need to do is send an expression of interest to Studyabroad@harper-adams.ac.uk   before Wednesday, January 15 next year.

Eligible students will then receive details of the formal application process and will have until 9am on January 26 to apply- before the final selection process is completed in early February.
