PhD student Laura Palczynski has secured a studentship from the Barham Benevolent Foundation to fund her research, “a qualitative social science investigation of UK dairy calf health and welfare”.
This is the first year of Laura’s three-year PhD and she will be conducting interviews and focus groups with a range of relevant people across the UK, including farmers, veterinarians, and industry representatives, to explore factors that influence decision-making related to the practices used in rearing youngstock.
Laura, from Bath, said: “When I saw the PhD studentship advertised, it sounded like a really exciting project, falling well within my research interests. It feels great to have secured this opportunity. I am studying a really interesting topic, supported by a fantastic supervisory team. None of this would be possible without the sponsorship from the Barham Benevolent Foundation, so I’m really grateful.
“I would like my research to contribute to improved knowledge transfer and implementation of evidence-based advice, to benefit animal welfare.”
