Details of a vast array of scholarship opportunities, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds in total, have been laid before students at ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ.

Every autumn, students are invited to investigate, select and apply for scholarship programmes relevant to their areas of study. Many include tuition fee support and the opportunity to work for the sponsoring company during the student’s year in industry.

The agricultural scholarships fair on campus saw the launch of recruitment to the new BPEX Pig Industry Scholarship scheme. Participating companies BOCM Pauls, ARM Buildings, Dalehead Foods, Farmex, Piggy Green, Pockthorpe Farm, Provimi and Wayland Farms Ltd all sent representatives to Harper Adams to meet eligible students and chat to them on an informal basis about the opportunities on offer.

Pig Industry Scholarships have been set up as a new route into the pig sector. Pork is the world’s most popular meat and there are exciting opportunities for ambitious young, in a diverse range of roles spanning pig production, nutrition, equipment design and manufacturing, health, genetics, marketing and more.

Administered by the ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ Development Trust and BPEX, the organisation representing pig levy payers in England, the scholarships will provide successful students with up to £7,000 towards tuition fees (across two academic years) and a 12-month paid work placement with their sponsor company. The scholarships are open to all second year BSc Agriculture and first year FdSc Agriculture students at ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ.

Nick Major, Director of Corporate Affairs with BOCM Pauls, who are offering a scholarship through the BPEX scheme, said: “Our main attraction to Harper Adams is the placement year. From our point of view, it’s a 12-month interview that works both ways. We get 12 months to interview the student and they get 12 months to decide whether BOCM Pauls is the sort of company they would like to work for.”

Also in attendance at the Agricultural Scholarships Fair were Velcourt, Harper Adams Club, HDC, KWS and Syngenta.

A second fair focussed on the British Poultry Council scholarships. These were launched in 2010 and are currently supported by Aviagen, Bernard Matthews Foods, Cargill Meats Europe, Cranberry Foods, Faccenda, Gressingham Foods, P D Hook, Kelly Turkeys, Moy Park and 2 Agriculture.

Charlie Morris, the first Cargill scholar, who has now graduated and works for the company as an agricultural systems analyst, said: “We are here to find our next placement student. We’re looking for someone who is interested in poultry, who doesn’t necessarily have experience of the poultry supply chain but is willing to learn. We like to tailor the placement around the student, so they can specialise according to their interests.”

Moy Park his also adopting the tailor-made placement approach. HR Business Partner Angela Posey explained that students would be able to choose from a range of locations throughout England and experience different parts of the business.

A further event saw CLAAS, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of agricultural engineering equipment, make use of a new engineering lecture theatre to showcase some of their latest kit and address undergraduate engineering students about an exciting scholarship opportunity. The students heard from CLAAS scholar Yale Brewer, Personnel Manager Jane Broomhall, and Commercial Manager William Helen about what they could expect if selected as a CLAAS scholar.

All scholarship applications will be considered in the coming months, with the winners announced as they are selected. A scholarship presentation event in February will celebrate the successes of scholars past, present and future, and unite them with the sponsor companies at Harper Adams.
