Chartered Surveyor (Rural) Degree Apprenticeship
Jessica, you’ve chosen to work and study at the same time – was that a deliberate decision?
Yes! I have always wanted to be a part of the agricultural industry with interest in land and property management - however, I didn't want to go to university full time. I thought that an apprenticeship would be the best route for me as it offers the perfect balance between learning and working.
From day one, you are able to gain real-world experience which is hands-on, and I knew I would always get so much more out of my studies applying them in a real job.
Once you’d set your mind on an Apprenticeship, what was it that drew you to Harper Adams as a University, and what was it like when you first visited us?
I chose to come here because of the University’s strong reputation in the industry and its focus on real-world learning. The experienced lecturers and facilities stood out straight away.
As an apprentice, it was important to find a university that understands the balance between work and study and Harper Adams really delivers. It felt like the right place to go to grow both professionally and personally and so far, it has definitely lived up to that.
My initial impressions of Harper Adams were really positive. When I first visited on an Open Day, I was impressed with how welcoming and friendly everyone was, from staff to current students. It didn't feel overwhelming like some universities can; instead, it had a real community feel, which instantly puts you at ease.
As an apprentice, I was also really impressed with how much the university understands and supports work-based learners. The facilities were excellent, and it was clear that everything was designed to give students practical, hands-on experience and not just classroom theory.
So, it’s the benefits outside the classroom which appeal, as well as the learning itself?
Indeed. So far at Harper Adams, my studies have opened up some amazing opportunities.
Through the first year of my apprenticeship, where I am working at Newton LDP - a land, development, property agency and consultancy firm - I have been able to gain hands-on experience in the industry while studying for my qualification.
It has allowed me to apply what I learn in real life which has helped boost confidence and skills at work.
Being linked with Harper Adams has also helped me build a strong professional network - which is something I didn't expect so early on in my career. I've had the chance to work on real projects, shadow experienced professionals and get insight into different parts of the business.
Looking ahead, I feel a lot more prepared and excited for the future, whether I stay with my current employer or explore new opportunities - thanks to Harper Adams.
Do you draw on what you’re learning at Harper Adams in your current role?
What I have learned has had a direct impact on my day-to-day work. The course content is practical and closely linked to what I do in the workplace, meaning I am constantly applying new knowledge and skills.
I have also developed better problem-solving, communication and time management skills through both my studies and the way Harper encourages independent thinking. Everything that I have learned so far has made me feel much more capable in my day-to-day work and is helping me progress faster in my career.
It sounds like you’re already finding your feet in your career! What’s next?
Right now, my goal is to keep developing my skills, gaining experience and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way. In the long term I would like to progress within my role and eventually move into a more specialised area of the industry. I am still exploring what path suits me best, but being at Harper has already opened my eyes to the range of careers out there.
For now, I am aiming to keep learning, grow in confidence and set myself up for future success as I move further into my apprenticeship.
If anyone out there reading this is considering an Apprenticeship like yours, what would your advice for them be?
I would say - go for it!
As an apprentice you get the best of both worlds, with real hands-on experience in the workplace and high-quality teaching and support from the university.
Harper really understands what it means to be an apprentice, with the lecturers being flexible, supportive and knowing that you are balancing study with work.
You are also surrounded by people who share the same interests and ambitions, creating a motivating environment. The campus facilities are great and there is always a real sense of belonging.
Even if you are not there full time, you still feel included and supported.
If you are serious about progressing in your career and want to gain a recognised qualification, while developing valuable skills on the job, Harper Adams is the best place to do it!
You will be supported every step of the way - and you will come out with both knowledge and experience that employers value.
