So, Amy, what made ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ stand out to you?

Well, I chose Harper Adams simply because the course was exactly what I was looking for – and the countryside location was just an added bonus! The setting is ideal for all our outdoor practical sessions, especially with the working farm, and it seemed a great place to study something that involved both the environment and conservation.

I was also really drawn to the range of modules and the integrated placement year, which turned out to be a real highlight. The teaching at Harper Adams is really practical and centred on real-world learning, with lecturers who’ve worked in industry. This approach totally suits my learning style and more than prepared me for my future career!

It’s also worth mentioning the incredible support Harper has in place for students — there is such a great support network here.  From academic guidance to wellbeing services, I knew I’d be supported throughout my time at Harper, and that made a real difference when choosing where to study.

What was your first experience of Harper Adams like – when did you start thinking this was the place for you?

When I came to an Open Day I immediately fell in love with the campus — there were so many friendly people who went above and beyond to make sure I got the most out of my day!

I met the Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Management course leader and spoke to current students, who were brilliant at explaining the degree, what to expect, and answering all my questions. Their enthusiasm and knowledge really stood out and I left feeling welcomed and reassured about starting at Harper Adams.

From day one, I never felt lost or overwhelmed. Everything was well organised, and there was always someone around to help. There were plenty of activities to help us settle in, from meeting our lecturers to getting to know other students on the course.

And how did your placement experience help you build on what you’d learnt here?

During my placement year, I worked in the Vale of Evesham with the Vale Landscape Heritage Trust as a Sites and Species Officer. The charity manages orchards and conservation sites across the Vale, restoring the heritage of Evesham’s market gardening past while managing land to benefit local wildlife. It was an incredible opportunity to develop skills that will support my future career in conservation.

I was responsible for overseeing sites, assisting with volunteer work parties, carrying out surveys, and producing a Biodiversity and Partnership Report to showcase the charity’s achievements over the years.

My time at Harper gave me both the knowledge and practical skills I needed to step confidently into that role. There’s such a strong focus on critical thinking and applied learning here, which really helped me communicate effectively in the workplace and within the wider sector. From managing projects to writing reports, my studies gave me the confidence and capability to contribute professionally — particularly when it came to networking and collaboration.

Sounds really exciting Amy! What’s next for you?

Thanks! I’ve decided to stay on at Harper Adams to study a Master’s in Entomology, as I have enjoyed my time here so much.

This course will give me the specialist knowledge and skills I need to pursue my future career goals, which I’m excited for. The University offers amazing opportunities for postgraduate study and has the expertise and support to help me move into this next chapter.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about applying to Harper Adams?

If you’re considering studying at Harper Adams, I’d say — absolutely go for it! There’s so much more to Harper than just being a university. It’s a supportive, hands-on learning environment where you’re genuinely valued as both a student and an individual.

The lecturers are passionate and approachable, the campus has a real community feel, and the placement opportunities are incredible. What really sets Harper apart is how practical the courses are — you’re not just learning theory; you’re applying it in real-world situations. That experience makes all the difference when it comes to building confidence and preparing you for your future career.
